It’s very common to repair or replace a clutch at some point in a vehicle’s lifetime. And even though it’s important to ensure safe clutches, it can be hard to know when a vehicle’s clutch is worn out. Below, we have listed some key signs that your clutch may be in need of repair or even replacement.

Signs your vehicle’s clutch is bad:

• Difficulty shifting gears: The clutch is a vital component in disconnecting the engine from transmission so a vehicle can shift gears. When the clutch is bad or worn out, the vehicle loses the ability to do this action, resulting in a struggle or complete loss of the ability to shift gears.
• Noises: Squeaky or grindy noises when the clutch pedal is engaged or disengaged are common whenever the clutch is bad. A specific example of alarming noises from a bad clutch could be sounds when the vehicle is in neutral but then quieting down when the pedal is pressed. Another example could be a squeaking or grumbling when the clutch pedal is pressed. 
• Loss of acceleration: When a clutch is bad or is slipping, it becomes difficult for the vehicle to transfer power from the engine to the drivetrain. The power from the drivetrain is what turns the vehicle’s wheels and without that power, the wheels aren’t able to turn effectively, leading to a loss or pause in acceleration. If you’re experiencing a loss or pause in acceleration, don’t be afraid to get your clutch checked out. 
• Burning smell: When a clutch is bad, it often overheats due to extra friction and the components burn – leading to a burning smell. Some other signs of a bad or worn out clutch include the clutch feeling soft or spongy when engaged or disengaged.
